Band Literature And Rehearsal Techniques Workshop

QUALITY LITERATURE FOR SCHOOL BANDS
This is an overview of repertoire encompassing literature at the grades 3, 4, 5 and 6 levels. Established standard literature as well as the most recent quality publications will be studied. Rehearsal procedures and score study will also be included.

GUEST CLINICIANS
Professor Scott Schwartz
, archivist, John Philip Sousa Archives at the University of Illinois, formerly of the Smithsonian Institute of Washington D.C., will present an overview of the John Philip Sousa Library.

Lucinda Lawrence, Assistant to the Director of Bands, Library Specialist at the University of Illinois, will discuss band library organization and procedures as well as music resources.

Gary Smith, Associate Director of Bands Emeritus at the University of Illinois will present some time saving rehearsal techniques.

James Keene, Director of Bands at the University of Illinois will present a history of concert bands.


DESCRIPTION
• Review of repertoire, to include score examination and listening.
• Methods of score study, including study aids.
• Repertoire evaluation, selection and curriculum development.
• Resource materials and networking opportunities.
• Advanced rehearsal techniques and teaching “shortcuts”.
• Conducting tips and “baton cleaning”.

• 2 Graduate College Credits or
• 30 Continuing Professional Development Units (CPDU)
